IP Europe interview with Fractus Executive Chairman Rubén Bonet highlights the role of patents, licensing and deep tech innovation in helping SMEs scale

Barcelona, Spain — Fractus, a pioneer in antenna technology and intellectual property licensing, marks World SME Day by sharing a new interview with IP Europe featuring Rubén Bonet, Fractus Executive Chairman and IP Europe SME Chair.

In the interview, Bonet explains how patents helped Fractus grow from a European technology spin-off into a global licensor of antenna innovations used across the wireless ecosystem. The conversation highlights a clear message for innovative SMEs: patents are not only a way to protect ideas, but also a tool to compete, attract investment, negotiate with larger companies and create long-term value.

"From the beginning, we understood that our main asset was not a product, but our inventions" , said Rubén Bonet, Executive Chairman of Fractus. "Patents gave us a way to protect our technology and to have a credible voice at the negotiating table, even as a small European SME. For companies built on deep technology, intellectual property can be the difference between being copied and being able to grow."

Fractus has more than 40 inventions protected by over 120 patents and patent applications worldwide. Its licensing programs have generated more than $250 million in royalties, part of which has been reinvested into new deep tech initiatives, including the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Fractus Chair in 6G with Universitat Pompeu Fabra. These initiatives reflect Fractus’ commitment to turning intellectual property into new research, stronger university-industry collaboration and future technology development in Europe.
